Conductor - Adelaide Youth Sinfonia
2. PURPOSE OF THE JOB
The Conductor plays an integral role in helping the organisation’s orchestras to achieve their artistic and educational goals. It is expected that the Conductor will work cooperatively and collaboratively with the Artistic Director, who is responsible for the artistic and educational aspects of the organisation’s orchestral programs.
It is expected apart from leading rehearsals, concerts and preparing music that conductors will be willing to assist with auditions, attend the organisation’s board meetings, participate in media engagements and contribute to artistic and educational planning.
3. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
The Conductor is to assist with the following:
• Researching orchestral music and preparing programs for the Artistic Director to approve
• Advising General Manager of orchestral hire requirements and/or orchestral manager tasks
• Preparing orchestral scores where required
• Supervising the Orchestral Manager and provide feedback to ensure that they’re providing appropriate assistance
• Ensuring the preparation of appropriate rehearsal plans and schedules in consultation with the Artistic Director and General Manager
• Running of orderly and constructive rehearsal sessions
• Advising General Manager of musicians to employ for tutorials
• Providing assistance with ensuring participants’ safety and well-being
• Conducting orchestras in performances, recordings and broadcasts
• Preparing artistic reports for monthly board meetings
• Provide artistic information to the General Manager for grant applications and acquittals
• Auditioning of candidates and final selection of musicians for orchestras
• Providing relevant information to the General Manager to assist with copyright reporting and program note writing
• Attend media and other orchestra related engagements
4. NATURE & SCOPE
The Adelaide Youth Orchestras annually present over 12 concerts at Elder Hall and in metropolitan and regional South Australia. These concerts exist to provide all of the organisation’s 150 plus musicians with appropriate performance experience and goals.
Orchestral Rehearsals occur after-hours and on weekends, therefore it is essential that you will be available to work outside of business hours.
The conductor plays a key role in ensuring the young musicians development and the feeling of reward and enjoyment from being part of an orchestra. As well, from time to time it involves working with parents and teachers to assist them with identifying their student’s / child’s future musical progression.
In terms of the organisation’s hierarchy, the conductor also plays a key community engagement role, through the way one presents and communicates at concerts, in the media and other public settings.
Essential:
• Demonstrated conducting and musical educational experience
• Musical qualifications, preferably at a post-graduate level
• Demonstrated experience in preparing programs which provide appropriate challenges and skills development
• Demonstrated ability to lead and work as part of a team and to liaise effectively with colleagues, parents and participants
• High standard of verbal and written communication skills and interpersonal skills
• Attention to detail, even when working under pressure
• High level project and time management skills
• An ability to prioritise and problem solve

•Public speaking and media skills

•Senior First Aid Certificate
•A passion and interest in diverse musical styles, including contemporary Australian music
Postgraduate music qualifications
